President's Message - April 2016

CHALLENGE YOURSELF THROUGH NEW GOALS

Challenge [chal'-inj] - Difficulty in a job or undertaking that is stimulating to one engaged in it.

Goal [gohl] - The result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end.

So many of us find ourselves in a rut, stuck in one place with nowhere to go. This, of course, happens in many aspects of life, but as photographers we often see it in our own work. I've been there and have found the best way to move forward is to find a new challenge and/or set some goals.

Your challenges don't have to be elaborate - they can be as simple as photographing something new, explore a genre in which you typically don't work. Connect with a friend and create a list of challenges for one another. Or, if you want to take it to the next level, there are many opportunities through PPA and the affiliates to push yourself. Take a look at the CPP program or start creating work for competition rather than grabbing a client file at the last minute. This will force you to think about the 12 elements of a merit print, including your use of color, light, composition, etc. And I promise: when you put these skills to work they will translate into your client work as well and you will see yourself grow.
